FACT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Let\u2019s clear the air on how the Line 3 tar sands oil pipeline really impacts Minnesota:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e7f5fe\"><thead><tr><th><strong><em>MYTH<\/em><\/strong><\/th><th><em><strong>FACT<\/strong><\/em><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>The ongoing Line 3 construction is a simple replacement project.<\/td><td>The new Line 3 takes a <a href=\"https:\/\/maptheblacksnake.com\/\">new route<\/a> through previously undisturbed waterways, and would more than double its current capacity.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>We need to double the capacity of Line 3 to meet demand for oil.<\/td><td>Enbridge tried to use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2021\/03\/23\/mn-appeals-court-hears-arguments-in-line-3-challenge\">supply forecast instead of a demand forecast<\/a>. Their mainline volume has actually decreased in the past year (S&amp;P).<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Line 3 is necessary because we will keep using oil for a long time.<\/td><td>Even conservative projections from the IEA forecast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldoil.com\/news\/2020\/10\/13\/iea-forecasts-a-serious-ongoing-oil-demand-hit-from-covid-19\">oil demand growth to end<\/a> sometime this decade.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>If this pipeline isn\u2019t built, there will be thousands of dangerous oil trains going through Minnesota.<\/td><td>There\u2019s no evidence that it\u2019s possible to transport 915 kbpd of oil by rail thru MN\u2019s rail network. Overall tar sands oil transport by rail was <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/58a3c10abebafb5c4b3293ac\/t\/604a70d965d3bc0c3c211f53\/1615491294978\/SNL3_ClimateChange.pdf\">much lower than that in recent years<\/a>.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Building a new pipeline would protect the environment and the economy long-term.<\/td><td>A newly built Line 3 would transport tar sands oil long past the time of economic unviability. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnpost.com\/community-voices\/2019\/07\/fossil-fuel-infrastructure-affects-minnesotas-economy-and-environment\/\">infrastructure lock-in would lead to increased costs and emissions<\/a> for Minnesota.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The new Line 3 would be much safer than the old Line 3.<\/td><td>There is no evidence for this claim. <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/58a3c10abebafb5c4b3293ac\/t\/604a6c0a2b07c0449e6811c2\/1615490060457\/LN3_NewFactsheet+1.pdf\">Safety is not related to age as much as it is to operator commitment to safety<\/a>, which Enbridge lacks.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The permitting process for Line 3 was scientific and robust.<\/td><td>The Line 3 permitting process was <a href=\"https:\/\/twincities.scienceforthepeople.org\/index.php\/2021\/02\/06\/line-3-hot-potato\/\">flawed on many levels<\/a>, and the Walz Administration failed to take responsibility for it.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Line 3 creates many local jobs for hardworking Minnesotans.<\/td><td>Enbridge promised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enbridge.com\/projects-and-infrastructure\/public-awareness\/minnesota-projects\/line-3-replacement-project\">over 75% local jobs<\/a>, but has only delivered on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/majority-of-those-working-on-enbridge-pipeline-from-outside-minnesota\/600024633\/\">23% of them<\/a>. The vast majority of these jobs are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2020\/12\/21\/contractor-at-enbridge-line-3-pipeline-site-dies-in-accident\">temporary and dangerous<\/a>.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Line 3 is boosting local economies in Northern Minnesota.<\/td><td>Enbridge went to court to avoid paying taxes in Minnesota, leading to a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/enbridge-prevails-in-minnesota-tax-court-counties-brace-for-fiscal-hit\/600037174\/\">worst case scenario<\/a>\u2019 for 13 Northern Minnesota counties.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The influx of pipeline workers is good for local communities.<\/td><td>Enbridge workers were caught in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/pipeline-workers-among-those-arrested-in-sex-trafficking-sting\/600026984\/\">child sex trafficking rings<\/a> in Northern MN.
